Chesterton House.

This is a Grade 2 listed house in Church Street, Chesterton, Cambridge. Many old houses have some windows blocked up, due to the 'Window Tax.' It was a property tax based on the number of windows in a house. Introduced in England and Wales in1696 and Scotland in1798 it was not repealed until 1851. It was designed to impose tax relative  to the prosperity of the taxpayer, but without the controversy that surrounded the idea of income tax. To avoid this tax, many windows were bricked up, leaving only those needed for light and can still be seen today. Around  the same time, taxes were introduced on wallpaper, hearths/fireplaces and glass. These days we have income tax, VAT and in some cases a bedroom tax on council properties where a bedroom is considered to not being used.
