Last of Late Flowers

This fine Golden Rod specimen still invites small bees and flies. the tall earlier Golden Rods are all done their work for the year and even going to seed ready to catch the wind and grow again elsewhere.
Autumn, our local gardeners agree, is almost a full month early. Our July and August were in full drought. That has sent waves throughout the natural time clocks to end their season early. Every rainy day now is greeted with joy. We need to see the soil accumulate deeper moisture for the evergreens and other perennials to survive the coming cold winter.
Come on rain! We expect rain all weekend. That could be a tail end of the hurricane dumping water to the south of us.

  Extra: A promise of future flowers. It is a pot crammed with Rose Campion seedings. I will overwinter it in a raised bed covered with dry leaves. The garden always leaves gardeners filled with hope for next year even as we say farewell to the one dying around us.
