A World Class Ruin
I know, another castle - or really, as the guide book says, a world-class ruin, and even more dangerous than the one we'd looked at earlier in Alandroal - deep holes everywhere, and roofs caving in, and pigeons flapping suddenly from their perches on crumbling pillars. Apart from military explosions, it was also damaged in the 1755 earthquake, and never restored... but at one time, Juromenha was hugely important, especially in defending Portugal from Spain - across the water, where two tractors are leaving a trail of dust.
We ate a fried river fish lunch, with starters and good bread and (excellent white) wine and coffee - for 12 euros total. And then a dip in the river (actually, the most northern part of the Alqueva Lake), warm, but a bit green with algae.
Then on to Mourão, to look at two properties - Mike liked one and I liked the other... more thought needed.
And the sun setting on the molten gold lake was the cause of me taking over 100 photos today, and of falling a little more in love with this place...
