MEMORIAL

Unveiled in 2009, I have blipped from this site once before. This grand metallic silhouette memorial is to members of 158 Squadron . . . air crew that flew Halifax Bombers from the airbase closest to Germany. The site, at Lissett, is now the base for twelve wind turbines, some of which can be seen in the background.

Silhouettes intrinsically have no front or back. They face you from whichever side you view them. When initially seen the crew is walking out towards the foe . . . and they do literally face the North Sea and Germany. There is a sense of departure, but then when walking around the memorial, the crew appears to be coming back, having returned safely from their mission.
These names of the airmen are etched randomly into both sides of the sculpture, and the overlapping of the figures shows one united group . . . conveying Strength in Unity which happens to be the motto of 158 Squadron.
