The Fire

Tampere was established on 1 October 1779 by Gustav III, the King of Sweden. Tampere celebrates this occasion every year and has Tampere Day on the first of October and the closest weekend to that date. We went to see the Rantaväylä highway tunnel, which was opened for pedestrians and cyclists for one day. Rantatunneli tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in Finland, 2,3 kilometres. There were around 50 000 people walking through the tunnel today! We walked from Santalahti to Naistenlahti and then walked back to Santalahti on the ground. The weather was wonderful!

The Rantatunneli tunnel will be opened for cars on 15 November, it's supposed to reduce traffic jams. On the both ends of the tunnel there are colourful ventilation pipes. The other pipe lies in Santalahti and is called the Fire and the other is in Naistenlahti and is called the Rain. Pipes were designed by Jan-Erik Andersson, who won the design competition.

Diameter of the pipes is 6,5 m and their tops are on the same level. The Fire is 30 meters high and the Rain (photo in extras) is 41 m .

Took a family portrait on our walk back to the car, it's also in extras. We had great day together! :)
