Fox Moth
The spaniel and I walked over Lewes Downs this morning and up unto Mount Caburn where we encountered a rather feisty group of heifers. We had to make an off piste detour for about a mile to get round them, down a very steep slope with long grass. We hadn't gone far when I started noticing these large (7cm) hairy brown/orange caterpillars, eventually there were dozens and dozens of them all over the grass some appeared to be eating salad burnet. Subsequently discovered that they are the caterpillars of the fox moth (macrothylacia rubi). This is the male.
