Mackerel
It's been three years since I last posted a photo but I was lured back by the need to get writing again. Normally, I would be preparing lectures and seminar plans but the life of the hourly-paid lecturer is an insecure one and I didn't get any work this term. Blip-blogging gives me the chance and the discipline of writing something, anything, on a daily basis.
I've gone for the easy option of posting a picture of one of my cats. Ages ago, I read something where the writer argued for cats having an aesthetic sense. In defence of her argument, she gave examples where her cats would sit amongst the flowers in her garden or lie on fabrics that set off their own colours. While Mackerel does look gorgeous against red, I am not going to anthromorphise his choice. This rug happens to be thick and comfy. Anyway, while I was having work done on the house I would catch them perched daintily on piles of rubble or curled up on filthy dust-sheets. So unless they were going through a brutalist phase, I really don't think where my cats curl up is an expression of their artistic sensibilities.
Perhaps all this musing was brought on by going to the opening of an exhibition, Models and Materialities: Confabulation and the Contemporary Still Life. It was curated by a friend as part of her PhD and, though I truly know nothing about art, it is very interesting. If you're in Cardiff, it's being held in BayArt.
