Mili Gorge
A change of pace today - instead of sun endless siesta and occasional swim we caught one of circular tour buses, double decker with open top which circled the city of Rethymnom and then climbed up into the mountain villages. As you can imagine this is some feat of driving given the narrow roads and hairpin bends. From the top of a bus those over- hanging trees look mighty close and threaten to knock your hat off. Our first port of call was Mili Gorge where you walk down vertiginous paths and endless steps along the side of the gorge as it descends to the sea, passing derelict houses, tiny chapels and watermills. Fortunately we passed a small taverna on the way down so we're able to summon all our energy to climb back up the pathway to gain refefreshment. My blip shows the derelict house that is just alongside the taverna and the winding gear by which they are able to obtain supplies from the road at the other side of the gorge. If you look at my extra you can see the basket and winch in more detail. (sorry the extra photos does not seem to be working today)
