Unnecessary journey
One of my favourite things about going away with the Minx is the travelling, whether it's by car or train, with a preference for the former. The fact that Hipping Hall is ten minutes away from Kirkby Lonsdale is, therefore, the only downside to this night away.
The location itself is lovely, though; a 15th Century building, whose great hall is roofed with beams allegedly taken from old ships. In reception you can look down into what appears to be an old well, and outside a stream runs past, which you can see in my photo. I don't know how old the building in the picture might be but given that the house was originally owned by blacksmiths, I wonder if some of their work was done here? Or maybe washing?
After a decent breakfast, which wasn't quite a match for the meal last night, we set off promptly. To compensate for the short journey home, we headed east to Ingleton and then north, out past the White Scar Caves and Ribblehead railway station before heading west for Dent. It's fun to imagine living out in these places, with their amazing old houses in beautiful locations, but they're a little too remote for me. I always think "but what if you forgot to buy the milk?"
