Reigate Tunnel

Wandered round Reigate today with friend A who is partially sighted and hangs onto my arm to make sure she does not walk into things.  Taking pictures is tricky because I have to desert her and I am not proud of any of the pictures  taken today. This is the most interesting only because this tunnel is believed to be the oldest road tunnel in Europe. It was built in 1823 underneath  Reigate castle to avoid going round the mound and was a toll road on the London to Brighton carriage route.  It was also built to provide easier access to the caves beneath the castle.  A clue to one of the old uses for the caves can be seen on the old sign just inside the tunnel on the left. A close up of the sign is an extra.  Only pedestrians are allowed through the tunnel now. Reigate traffic has to sit in the one way system which seemed permanently busy
