While sorting through the coins left in my purse after our Baltic holiday last week, I decided that they might be suitable for the MonoMonday challenge of 'culture' as they illustrate some of the local culture.
The Latvian Euro has an illustration of a woman dressed in a stylized folk costume with ears of grain over her shoulder, reminding me of the folk singers and musicians who entertained the crowd last Saturday at the Harvest Festival celebrations. The other Latvian coin shows the country’s coat of arms which they are particularly proud of since they became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991.
A day ferry trip from Tallinn to Helsinki and a blip meeting with Susanna meant that we were able to see the beautiful location of Helsinki with its innumerable parks, very different church styles and views of the sea inlets with various boats including huge icebreakers which no doubt will soon be working to clear the Baltic seaways from winter ice. Unfortunately we did not see any of the whooper swans which are the national bird and on the Euro but did see buildings with the heraldic lion which is on the other Finnish coin.
The rest of my Euro money did not include any Estonian coins so these were obviously spent on buying some of their delicious foods for our picnics or evening meals.
