Monastery in Mljet National Park, Croatia
A monastery on an island on a (sea-water) lake on the island of Mljet, Stunning wooded countryside dominates this part of the island.
It was founded by the Benedictines in the mid 12th century, and disbanded in 1809 following Napoleon's anmnexation of the Republic of Ragusa into the "Illyrian Provinces".
If you have never heard of Ragusa and its Republic, don't worry: it was only in preparation for this trip to Croatia that I became aware it. There is a different Ragusa in Sicily - which can add to the confusion - this Croatian town is now named Dubrovnik.
