Saturday was not the speediest start ever; a gentle amble through breakfast, some soup was heated and we boarded a bus for the station; from the station to Linlithgow (with a couple of Weegers who looked for all the world like theywere fleeing Embra, dog, suitcases, kitchen utensils and a bottle of Glen's vodka (with added fresh orange - it looked thirsty work...)
We got out and after skipping past the 70s planning disasters of Linlithgow (one day of that in Cumbernauld was quite enough, thank you) we hooked up with the John Muir Way and followed up out of town towards Bo'ness.
Through Kinneil House (including Watt's cottage) and on down to the shoreline which we hugged for a good few miles, past mud flats and yacht clubs and harbours and the steam railway museum.
And westwards eastwards to Blackness (See photo) on good tarmac paths and onwards into the woods that eventually gave way to Abercorn and finally Hopetoun House. Obviously the riffraff were ushered around the periphery and past the fallow deer; and back down to the shoreline to gaze in wonder at the third Forth Bridge (they missed a trick, no one wants it be called the QE Bridge, no one)
And onwards through the Ferry and onto a train back to town. (in a rare moment of foresight, we bought return tickets to Linlithgow and as there was no guard, we used them to bail out at Haymarket, grab supplies on Shandwick Place before another bus back home; hot baths and dinner (lamb marinated in yoghurt, mint, chilli, coriander, lime) and then pan fried, served with tabulleh and char grilled aubergine and courgette.
Rice pudding followed (with plum jam)
Only 16 miles (at nearly 4mph) but a decent leg stretcher.
I slept well.
