Great Green Bush-cricket (again)

This extremely large and bright green bush-cricket is mostly found in hedges and areas of bramble, primarily near the south coast, but with isolated populations as far north as Yorkshire. 

In Cambridgeshire the main population is along the east coast railway corridor, extending out into other suitable habitats. In late summer the bramble bushes and low scrub at Conington resound with the high-pitched and extremely loud song, which is said to sound like a rusty sewing machine. Despite this noise and their size they are extremely hard to spot, thanks to the green colour which provides excellent camouflage. 

The extra shows a close up of the head and jaws, which can give a nasty nip. They should therefore always be handled gently and carefully!
