Sunday tea on the back porch with a wee visitor

Another guest today with which to visit on the back porch.

The little lady in the attached photographs didn’t seem to be intimidated at all when she flew up to join me for a late afternoon tea (I had the tea, she bird seed).

I am identifying her as a female House Finch. The male House Finch is much more colorful with a heavy splash of red about his head and breast. The female is rather drab. Because I detect a touch of red on my visitor, perhaps, he(?) is a young male?

According to the Cornell Laboratory of Orthniology, quoting now, “The House Finch is a recent introduction from western into eastern North America (and Hawaii), but it has received a warmer reception than other arrivals like the European Starling and House Sparrow. That’s partly due to the cheerful red head and breast of males, and to the bird’s long, twittering song, which can now be heard in most of the neighborhoods of the continent. If you haven’t seen one recently, chances are you can find one at the next bird feeder you come across.”
