Carlow

We drove down to Carlow and spent a fascinating hour or so with the genealogist in the library, attempting to track down my great-grandparents. Bernie was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we found several possible families. She was very taken with DaveH's blip of Bridget's christening cup.

Before our appointment we had time to walk up and down the main street and see what was to be seen - not much, frankly. A lot of establishments were closed down. All the old established pubs seemed to be clustered up at one end of the street, along with a bookmakers;  there must have been a lot of horsey business going on back in the day. (Note brass horse's head supporting the bar railing). We had a pint and a sandwich in Reddy's, which has been there since 1768 so could well have been visited by either of my great-great-grandfathers, assuming they could afford the price of a pint.
