Prospering

After a leisurely start to the day, we drove north. In constant rain. Almost at the time we got here, the rain stopped and S was able to see how well the clivias are doing. They have survived being shifted around, neglected, overgrown by other plants and now appear firmly established and happy where they are.

They are bulbous plants from subtropical South Africa. This is the more common species in New Zealand, Clivia miniata also known as the fire lily. Orange was once the only colour, and it remains the most common, although pink, red and yellow flowered clivias are available in NZ. The Book of Flowers for New Zealand Gardeners tells me that these flowers "thrive in a shady spot" in a warm-climate garden. These ones are certainly prospering in such a spot.

Later, after a bit of rest, I returned to Warkworth for a bit of grocery shopping, and saw the Mahurangi River in spate. A photo of that is my extra for today
