The citadel
Today we made our way further south and drove through the mountains to arrive at Sisteron, a place we have seen so many times on road signs, but have never been to. We are staying in a hotel just outside the town and, when we arrived, decided to have a look at the town itself. It is an amazing place, built at a narrow rocky gap where the Durance and Beuch rivers join. There is a huge cliff, Rocher de la Baume, on one side of the river and this imposing 13th to 17th century citadel on the other side, protecting the town.
Every time we have made this journey to Provence, we have planned our final stop in a different place, the criteria being - not too far to drive on a Saturday, has a Saturday morning market. Tomorrow we will visit the market in the town and eventually make our way to Bonnieux.
