Last Day
And so, the last full day of our holiday and the first day that we didn't travel by boat anywhere.
We went to Salem – home to one of the most prestigious boarding schools in Germany, Schule Schloss Salem. The founder of the school went on to set up Gordonstoun in Scotland & the Outward Bound courses.
We enjoyed looking at the buildings and the gardens and the church (built in 1319) – but I can't give the place a recommendation to visit.
It costs you 9 Euro to get in. But if you want to see the really good bits, you need to pay to join one of the tours. To see the best bits, you have to joined the most expensive tour. And if you want to photograph the best & really good bits, you have pay on top of that as well.
I'm not a tour group person, I like to wander and wonder. And our experience of the tour guides was that they were (today) comprised of over-made-up-sour-faced-Tussis, convinced of their own importance and desperately in need of patronising people.
I'm sure that Tussi and Zicke are pretty much interchangeable here.
And so we walked away feeling a bit cheated.
The extra is where G managed to sneak in and take a quick shot of the library.
The buildings are lovely and the gardens are Ok.
The Blip comes from inside the Münster and shows the heart of the enterprise.
I do enjoy a bit of Gothic.
Afterwards we went to Überlingen for a walk along the lake and a bit of it-would-have-been-lunch-but-we-only-ordered-crepes-with-ice-cream (it was very sunny and warm). We also visited the Church That Looks Like It's Giving You The Finger on the way. You'll need German for that link.
Off out to dinner tonight and then heading home early-ish tomorrow. Bring on the Elefantenrennen.
To explain Elefantenrennen: Articulated lorries are pretty much confined to the inside lane of the Autobahn, but every once in a while they are allowed to overtake. Because this takes ages, it's known as Elephant running. And you can see them desperately trying to overtake for the 10 miles where it is allowed.
