Attended a Franco-Scottish workshop in my field at the Royal Society of Edinburgh today where we were encouraged to pay our respects to James Clerk Maxwell, whose statue is nearby. Unfortunately, by lunchtime the beautiful morning had given way to grey cloud.

Unlike the University, which failed to appoint him to a professorship (and only claims him because he did his first degree there) the RSE (like the Royal Society) recognised him with a fellowship.

His work was "most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton" [Einstein]
