How do you measure distances?
Google maps tells me it's 135 miles from the pebble to Glasgow. When I see that number out of context, my German mind translates it into just over 200 km and says that it must thus take about 2.5-3 hours of travelling to cover the distance.
Being here, I have taken to talking about how much time it takes to get to places, rather than thinking about the actual distance.
This morning, I left the pebble on the 9am ferry and was in Glasgow at 4pm (in the hotel at 5pm). 7 hours on public transport or waiting around.
It is a long journey, and while the views are stunningly beautiful, sometimes I'm not a huge fan. But (apart from the bus ride which tends to make me travel sick) it does give me time to read, to think, to be. And today I did just that and appreciated it.
