“Doon the watter” to Rothesay

We are in Rothesay for the night.

This is an island recently in the headlines because they were amongst the first to take Syrian refugees in.
There followed some further publicity when some Syrian refugees said they were less than enamored with this tiny island off the west coast of Scotland because it was full of old people and no jobs.

Historically Rothesay has a special place in the affections of Glaswegians. It's here shipyard workers came for their two-week annual holiday.

Then the shipyards closed and cheap holidays to Spain became the norm replacing the annual pilgrimage " doon the watter."

Now Rothesay struggles to find  a role for itself in the 21st century.
