Rock of Ages
What a day! Just back from a long yomp around the countryside in pursuit of rock art. Yes, a day organised by our pals Robert and Finola, a dozen of us gathered in a very soggy car park in Ballydehob and sallied forth. First stop a few cup marks, a lot of rain and dampish enthusiasm. Next stop, a squelch over some very rutty fields but the rock in an awe-inspiring situation over-looking a lake; massive cup marks and Christian crosses. Feeling rather damp, we had a quick break in Goleen - coffee, huge scones, a warm up and as we emerged the sun was also coming out. Revived, next stop we staggered down an incredibly muddy boreen, emerging into a landscape that looked like a mini Uluru! A long skinny stone covered in cupmarks but as we climbed up the mini Uluru, cursing the gorse, more cup marks were revealed in a cleft. Magical. Next stop, and now it was steaming, was the piece de resistance - see above. Only discovered four years ago, most of it covered in moss and bog, this rock art is in pristine condition and just gob-smacking. Some of the party left at this point to see the match (Mayo v Dublin - draw), the rest of us staggered on to see a few more examples. Astonishing really. We also came across the incredibly rare Kerry slug having a quiet meander around a concentric circle - maybe that is what it is all about.
I've done a collage of our exploits if you care to peruse the extra. Another entry for Derelict Sunday too, as these are certainly no longer used for their original purposes and many are just sitting quietly among all the lush countryside, undisturbed.
