Raging Grannies
At the rally to promote a rent freeze in Portland, held today at City Hall, the Raging Grannies performed several choreographed songs and then invited the crowd to join them.
It was pouring rain, but many of us took cover with the Grannies under the City Hall portico. The Grannies are an international movement, a group for women of a certain age who demand radical change. An aim of the Grannies is to poke fun at stereotypes of older women, but I have mixed feelings about the costumes. They could reinforce, rather than subvert those stereotypes. Costumes aside, their hard-hitting lyrics always have a sharp edge to them, and the group is wonderfully visible in a crowd.
