Mono Monday: Traditional

mere: a traditional Maori weapon.
Made of wood, bone or greenstone (which is the most prized) the patu was worn in the warrior's war belt. Known as a mere, kotiate or wahaika (depending on the design) each had a wide flat blade. A thrusting rather than striking weapon, the patu's sharp front edge was brought against an opponent's temple or neck. A final blow was delivered to the skull as the enemy fell.

A gift from New Zealand from my sister. I have never visited this beautiful country, but hope to someday. This one is hand carved from Rimu, a coniferous wood native to NZ.
