He had spent his entire career being alternately derided by the Abstractionists as being too chocolate-box and by the Representationalists as a conceptual artist who couldn’t draw.

His paintings commanded impressively high prices.

Under an assumed name, he was a sucessful painter of rural landscapes.

And, using a third name, he produced a string of wildly abstract pieces which most people had never heard of but which were worshipped by the critics and a small cadre of collectors.

He was all about brand differentiation.
