Plague Stone.
A busy day round home, Laundry for the lodge, using the green tomatoes from the outside plants for chutney and making a couple of loaves. Clickychick was out all day at her open studio first day. C-Art run a project every year where artists open their studios for a "fortnight" (OK slightly longer as it covers 3 weekends).
When she arrived home we strolled down to the church to put flowers of FredaH's grave. As we went through the glebe field I spotted the plague stone, it had almost slipped from my memory.
For those who don't know British History around 1665 there was a terrible out break of Beubonic Plague which killed about a third of the population. Plague stones were a desperate attempt to stop the spread of the infection. Vinegar was put in the bowl and money dropped into it by plague victims and retrieved by those who were selling them food. At least that is what google says, I was always given to understand it was traders from outside the village but there you go.
As the plague was spread by fleas it was totally ineffective.
