Surrey Docks

It seems always to be raining when No 1 son  R and I are looking for geocaches on machinery.

This bascule bridge replaced an old wooden swing bridge in 1959. It lifts like a drawbridge, originally to let ships into Surrey Docks. Bascule is French for see saw or balance . Tower Bridge is a more famous example of a bascule bridge but this one is pretty impressive. It's no longer operational with only pedestrians and cyclists allowed to cross it.  
We were in Rotherhithe for the 9th London City orienteering race. Mr P had a meeting afterwards - R and I went geocaching.
