SWINGER

Today a more unusual signalbox. Built for the Hull and Selby Railway and opened in 1891, and with only two levers, this swing bridge has a span of 130 feet - 40metres - and a fixed span 110 feet - 34 metres across the River Ouse. As crossings by rail were more than ten times those of rivercraft, this special signal box was installed to control movements. Operated by steam powered hydraulic engines, the control box is located above the tracks at the centre of the swing span. The photo shows clearly the superstructure constructed of wrought iron plate girders in a hogback style.
