Doors Open Days

Torrential rain this afternoon after church meant that the only sensible thing to do was stay under cover.

I decided to take advantage of the "Doors Open Days" when some buildings not normally open to the public are open free of charge and with well informed guides available to give some of the history. 

I had a look at the Old Cupar Burgh Chambers and then visited the County Buildings where there was the opportunity to visit the underground dungeons shown in the blip the history of which is not fully known and may predate the building built above in the early 1800s.
The doors are massively thick, studded with metal and with a large chain which apparently had an equally large padlock attached. This room appears to have been nicely refurbished in the 1940s but some of the other dungeon rooms are much more basic.

I liked the Old Scots saying, dating back to the early 18th century, on a plaque - although it doesn't necessarily relate just to prisoners it seems some prisoners were a bit stubborn and ended up with the fate they deserved !
