There is a small memorial being held this weekend for two local lads who died in the Somme 100 years ago this week...sad stories of hardship and loss for their parents.  Picture of the Horse of Copinsay, from the cemetery where the war memorial lists their names.

It was pointed out to me that the inscription on the memorial for WW1 gives the dates 1914-1919, but no further information...slightly misleading, as it appears that the war lasted longer here than in the rest of the world, but it is because some of the casualties died after the war had ended (I think!).
