'Fireweed' on fire

At this time of the year Rosebay (Willowherb) points the way to autumn with its glowing red leaves. Just a few stems, in an otherwise healthy green clump of the plant, start turning this vivid colour. Rosebay is known as 'fireweed' due to its habit of colonising burnt areas of woodland. During the two world wars it became a common invader of bomb craters, earning it the further common name of 'bombweed'. Anyway, I think we can now take it that autumn is on its way.
