Sacrificed to progress

Our leisure centre fields are being steadily eroded as the new school emerges. Today this sight met us - a row of trees along the side of the car park gone to make way for the new access road! (see extra pic). As I got out of the car I said to the dogs 'Oh no, not the trees'. A man getting out of a car was obviously something to do with the construction (suit and hard hat not overalls) and airily said 'don't worry, we'll be planting more than we cut down'. Maybe they will, but they will be no help to the birds, give no shade or visual pleasure for several years.
