Dunston Staiths

Today we went for a walk by the Tyne river at Dunston.  This area is dominated by the huge wooden structure that is called Dunston Staiths.  They were opened in 1893 so that coal could be loaded straight onto ships that had made their way up the river.  

The Staithes fell into disrepair in the second half of the 20th century but were fully restored for the 1990 Garden Festival that was held in the area.  Sadly there was a fire in 2003 that destroyed part of them.  It is still possible to walk on part of them at certain times.
