Journals
Oh so tired today so I indulged in afternoon snooze. From my cosy position I could see the rain pouring down outside and on top of the shelf a teetering pile of diaries and notebooks.
I'm not sure why I've held onto most of these as they mainly relate to work stuff. In amongst them though, and not for throwing out, are holiday journals and my great grandfather's diary from 1913.
Rather than it recording appointments in advance it records the visits he has made and has his cash accounts at the back. I think his record visits to women in one day 10 on 6th February... He was a Minister so I trust these were pastoral visits in the purest sense!
In June he came over to Scotland for a week, sailing into Ardrossan and touring round, staying in Temperance Hotels and sailing from Glasgow to Oban and then on to Fortwilliam. I'm not sure what's worst, a trip to Saltcoats before he sailed home or returning home to attend a wake.
Accounts at the back include paying for Barley seed, manure and ploughing the field. Although there is a worrying entry under Paid Workers which is 2 Women. Apparently they cost marginally less than the workers...
