The Custard Apple
I promised to show them when they mature, and in about a week I will show a ripe one, cut open and I will give some suggestions of how to enjoy them most!
A custard apple is ripe when you gently squeeze it and it gives slightly under your hand, it takes between 20 and 25 weeks to reach maturity in sub-tropical climates
The Custard Apple has many black seeds, the flesh is mushy, off white, and very tasty when ripe, it is an excellent source of Vitamin C
The African Pride, which is the species we have here, is a medium sized, well shaped 500g to 800g fruit that sets well on the tree.
This fruit can be cut in half, hollowed out and used in fruit salads with ice cream, soufflés, crumbles and curries. If this is puréed, it can be used in ice cream, drinks, desserts and cakes.
