Art Deco

It’s something of an art deco building and is home to the Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.
In fact the Plaza was originally built as a cinema in the early 1930s, but when its life as a cinema came to an end in the 1970s it became a bingo hall, and then later it fell  derelict.
So when RAODS as the town’s Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society came along to buy it in 1982, they breathed new life into the building and gave it a fresh sense of purpose, fulfilling a much respected role in the community..
The Society converted it into a theatre with unusually, two areas for performances — the main auditorium with seating for over 200 and a separate bar and reception area which doubles as a 45 seater studio.
Currently the Society is preparing for its autumn season which begins with production of the farce Look No Hans in a just over three week’s time.
Yet throughout the year it provides a mix  of pantomime, musicals, operetta, drama, dance, youth productions and live music.

And  curiously, one of the plans for its future development, could see it have cinema equipment installed once more, along with enhanced facilities for stage productions.
