St Mary's Church, Old Basing

Today we went to the Mill Field Festival in Old Basing to talk to the north Hampshire Incredible Edible people. After a good long chat - they are nice people - we went for a walk around Old Basing.

There are quite a few nice thatched cottages and old houses in the village, you can see why it's a desirable place to live if you live in Basingstoke. It's also the home of Basing House, which was one of the last Royalist hold outs against the Parliament during the English Civil War. Annoyingly Parliamentarian forces destroyed the building which is a pity as it would have made an amazing tourist attraction today.

The light was very bright today and even with a polariser it was very harsh and not the most flattering. Today's blip is the least harsh, it's St Mary's Church at the other end of the village from the ruins of Basing House. Apparently the church is a Grade 1 listed building, and appears to have been built and rebuilt from 9th century to 19th century. The 20th century add-ons being tagged on the side and not counted as part of the whole.
