J. Embery zoo trainer/keeper to spoke-person

This photo of SD Zoo calendar is of Joan Embery when she was a trainer-keeper in the children's Zoo.  The head of the Childrens Zoo a male, only hired females as keepers because men to often displayed aggression & dominance or so I was told.  In the late 60's, the zoo management did a search for a spokesperson and hired a young women (beauty queen) who failed because she did not get along well with animals and she was replaced with Joan.  In the early 70's, they had to replace their director.  He didn't do well upsetting many of the regular employees like myself and was let go w/in a year because of falsified credentials.  I worked at the Zoo & WAP for many years, in concessions, Elephant ride and Bus tours and am thankful for the experience.
