The King
Today, August 16th, marked the 39th Anniversary of the greatest entertainer and singer the world has ever known- ELVIS PRESLEY.
I remember clearly the day he died, even though i was very young.
I was up in bed and I even remember it was a really stormy night.
My Dad opened the bedroom door looking shocked, almost teary, and said "Elvis is dead" and walked back out.
"What" "Elvis is dead"? I couldn't believe it.
We always had Elvis music on at home. I had never known anyone die then, I still had all my grandparents, and I certainly had never seen my parents look so sad.
The media attention that followed for weeks was unbelievable. It seemed this didn't just affect my family, it affected everyone.
From then on I wanted to discover more about this man, and the more I discovered the more I liked him.
He didn't just sing 'Rock N Roll', there was Country music, Blues, Gospel, Pop, even operatic (It's Now or Never). He started life poorer than poor. His dad went to prison for forging a cheque and they were constantly moving home because of rent arrears yet in the space of less than a year he became the most famous person on earth known simply by his first name.
Anyway - You probably know all that.
Tonight I celebrated the life of Elvis with a Beer and one of my favourite DVD's.
