Sounds of Silence....

Most of our textile mills have fallen silent after a long and slow decline, whilst a few niche companies still manage to keep going its a long way from the heyday of textiles when the boast among local wool barons was "more Rolls Royces to the square mile than anywhere else in the U.K". 

When I learnt that today's challenge would be "sound" I immediately thought of the Simon and Garfunkel hit  -   Sounds of Silence, but nothing could be more contrasting than the constant din and racket that mill workers had to contend with during their regular working day.  Apparently the sound of the noise was such that people had to learn to lip read simply so that they could communicate during work hours.

The Locomotive Bridge pictured at the front of my blip is 150 years old; it has Scheduled Ancient Monument status and is situated on the Huddersfield Broad Canal.  The mill behind was once used for the processing of cotton  -  unusual in these parts as wool has always been the fibre that has outweighed all others in the area.
