The Wadworth Shires (Friday 5th August 2016)

This is the time of year that the clumpy boys go on holiday. Archie (now four), Monty and Max are taken from the brewery to their holiday campsite for a couple of weeks of fun and rest.

This year was slightly different as the field near the Raven in Poulshot is no longer available following the death of the landowner and Wadworth director Major James Bartholomew. Instead, there is a field a couple of miles further away belonging to his son Charles Bartholomew, another director who is also chairman of the Shire Horse Society.

Therefore the send-off was from outside the brewery's Visitor Centre in Devizes, where they had their pint of Wadworth's (apart from Max, a decidedly teetotal horse). The blip shows a tender moment between Monty and Hannah.

From there we were directed to the field at Mill Farm in Bulkington in good time to see the shires arrive by transporter and be released into their holiday home. They wasted no time before kicking their heels for a good runaround.

I asked Charles Bartholomew for permission to visit them on his private road next to the field during their fortnight there, and he immediately kindly agreed.

The Wadworth pub the Raven lost out in a big way because the send-off used to be from there, as the shires could make the trip from the pub to the old holiday field in a couple of minutes. However, if it's any consolation, I went there for a Wiltshire ham salad baguette, a bowl of chips and a half of Corvus stout afterwards.

I have just finished work on all the pictures I took and have begun uploading them. The album of photos from the brewery is complete and the Bulkington album will be up within the next couple of days.
