Mementoes of an awful journey
Got the train from York this morning with no problems, bikes in the guard's van and reserved seats as ordered.
Got to Retford to be told there had been an incident between Grantham and Newark and the train was being held in the station. That was at 1035.
At 1330 we were told that the train would not proceed south today but a limited service northbound was available so we made alternative arrangements, got the bikes out of the guards can and bought tickets and bike reservations for Saturday.
We had just got back on the platform when the announcement was made that the train was leaving immediately.
Rush to put bikes back on and phone calls to cancel arrangements.
Got to Peterborough, picked up a claim form for the tickets we dude' need and caught the 1518 to Audley Ebd. It was heaving.
As we approached Ely were told a tractor had collided with a train near Waterbeach and it was buses from Ely to Cambridge.
Took well over half an hour to find out what we could do and finally they agreed to put the bikes in the luggage compartment of a coach.
Arrived in Cambridge about half past five and decided to have a cup of tea first then cycle the 20 miles home which we completed at 2000.
Totally knackered and very stressed, not the result we wanted after our trip.
