Highway 64 across Southern Tennessee
We did a trip to Memphis from Chattanooga the past three days. It's about a 660 mile round trip, 330 miles one way. So it takes five to seven hours depending on the number of stops one makes.
One day over, a one day visit with mother, then the one day trip back to Chattanooga. We travel Highway 64 rather than the interstate because of traffic. Once out of West Tennessee, there are virtually no big trucks on the road, and traffic is usually much, much lighter. Traffic does pick up when going through the little towns, but the difference in 64 and Interstates 40 and 24 is significant.
Mother is doing well. She and her care giver have returned to mother's house in East Memphis. She has lived in the house for more than 50 years, and she had much rather be there than in a care facility.
My dear wife and I try to drive over about once a month or so. We are fortunate that the drive is scenic. The local history is engaging. The spirit and ghosts of the old Southern Confederacy hang thick in rural Tennessee.
Whenever we can, and Monday we could, we stop at the Cat Fish Hotel near Savannah, on the bank of the Tennessee River, to enjoy the restaurant's wonderfully traditional fried catfish, hushpuppies, cole slaw, potatoes, fresh onion, and lots and lots of cold iced tea. Makes a man want to hug his mamma!
