Unexpected Delights
Our latest guests here in Barcelona are two, fun, young US-Chinese girls from New York City. They are also both professional violinists and are staying with us on their way back from giving a concert in Geneva. What an unexpected delight it was last night when Zou asked if she could practice in the front room upstairs. The hour was very late as I sat on the patio with Dd working at the dining table and Zou's slow scales filling the house, each as poised and redolent as a Hemmingway sentence. Then dexterity-defying exerts from Elgar, Sibelius and Bernstein - a medley of West Side Story - set the air a-dancing and, I hope, the neighbours a-smiling. It was ten past eleven when the last notes of 'One Hand, One Heart' stretched out across the courtyards and hung achingly in the air like the sign-off firework of a dazzlingly display. I imagine even the sternest kill-joy would smile as they lay on their pillow.
