The number of estate agents "TO LET" signs indicates the problems associated with the economy of the city. In the pedestrianised shopping area more than 20% of all shops are empty, including the former department store at the one end. I noticed a number of new cafes and coffee shops have taken over some of these shops, adding to the existing catering which includes Costa and Cafe Nero.

Good luck to them but I can't help but wonder whether they will succeed if the shops needed to entice people into the city in ther first place are not there.
