AI WEIWEI'S CUBES.
Exhibited in the Heong Gallery, Downing College, Cambridge, are four one metre cubes in various materials. This one is called 'Treasure Box' and made from Huali wood, beautiful rich colours. The extra is a crystal cube, very lovely to look at from various angles. Of two others lined up ( not shown), one was 'Cube In Ebony' and the other was 'Ton Of Tea' made from one ton of compressed Pu'er tea. Weiwei was born in Beijing 1957, the son of the poet Ai Qing who was politically exiled. Later, Weiwei was himself detained in solitary confinement for his outspoken comments on art, architecture and public life, but was released after an outcry from his supporters, although deprived of his passport until 2015. Earlier this year I blipped a series of superb tree sculptures he made.
