West Ham 2 Juventus 3

Today marked the official opening of 'The London Stadium' for West Ham United.
The pre match ceremony involved Trevor Brooking officially opening the new 'Trevor Brooking stand' and 'Bobby Moore's grandson officially  opening the new 'Bobby Moore stand'.
There were fireworks, a military band and dancers.
West Ham played in a commemorative one-off kit which was a replica of the 'Thames Ironworks' shirt of 1895 which was dark blue with a Union Jack badge.
Thames Ironworks were formed as a Football team in 1895 from the company of the same name which built ships on the River Thames.
5 years on in 1900 the team went professional and changed their name to the area in which they played 'West Ham'.
The pre match ceremony also involved large replicas of that original kit, along with our current kit and the words spelt out in big letters (to the bottom of the photo) "THANK YOU TO OUR FOUNDERS.

You may be wondering why everyone in my stand are holding blue or claret bags?
We had to hold them up as the teams came out.
I had no idea what it represented until I saw this image later...

Impressive huh!

For those that aren't familiar West Ham have 2 nicknames.
The first is "The Hammers'.
Many think this is because of West HAM. It is not. The crossed Hammers was West Hams first badge after 1900 when they became West Ham and it represented the tools of the trade of our founders the ship builders.

Our second nickname is 'The Irons' after our original name "Thames Ironworks' hence the slogan often used "Come on you Irons!".

There you go - A photo and a History lesson.
