Fungi 'skulls'

Walking in Mine woods this afternoon I came across this collection of fungi.
 
They remind me of the monks’ skulls in St Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai desert.
It’s a place I visited some years ago though now with the terrorist threats it is no longer on the tourist agenda.
