Not as peaceful as it looks

I have blipped the little village of Keld before, as it has a charming chapel, which is worth seeing if you are anywhere near Shap. This is the bridge that you get to if you go down through Keld, past the chapel. It isn’t the prettiest of bridges, but it is worthy of attention, as it is here that the River Lowther begins.

The Lowther is a small river that eventually flows into the Eamont and this is where it starts. In the picture you can see two streams running under the bridge – Keld Gill and Keld Dub (The Gill is out of sight behind the grassy hummock as it arrives at the bridge; the Dub has spread and formed little islands.) These two streams have gathered waters from the fells north and east of Haweswater and at this point, under the bridge, they merge to form the River Lowther. I had seen this on the map and decided I wanted to actually find the spot.

A peaceful spot you might think. Well, usually it is, as the road over the bridge doesn’t really go anywhere. But today there was activity!

As I walked over the bridge - this is what I saw

Then as we walked back to the car – this is what we saw.

I have no idea what the tractors were doing, but I do know why the guy was running. This was the end of the Total Warrior Challenge that is held in the Shap area every year – ‘the pinnacle of obstacle racing’! Each to their own!

**** If the links to Flickr don't work, I have added the 'what I saw' as extras.
